Hydrogeology involves understanding how and where water moves in the subsurface. This requires knowledge of groundwater levels and the geological framework through which groundwater flows. However, to fully comprehend groundwater flow, especially on a regional scale, hydrogeologists must also understand the amount of water entering the ground, which is influenced by climate. Therefore, tracking precipitation and temperature records is essential to estimate water availability (i.e. recharge). Additionally, understanding how much water is leaving the ground (i.e. discharge) and where this occurs is also crucial. In southern Ontario, streamflow data is a key parameter that helps hydrogeologists determine groundwater movement.
The ORMGP addresses various elements to build a solid understanding of groundwater flow around the Oak Ridges Moraine, using reliable data and rigorous science to improve decision-making.
