The ORMGP has over 14,000 documents available to its partner agencies and companies. All library documents are searchable in a variety of ways including text and by spatial analysis. Examples include consultant reports, government maps, scientific papers, and newspaper articles – basically anything that can assist you in a better understanding of Ontario’s subsurface and groundwater resources. All library documents are searchable in a variety of ways including text and by spatial analysis – all documents are assigned x/y coordinates when they are added to the library. The ORMGP maintains a numerical model archive that contains approximately 100 numerical models. The particle tracking tool was developed to help make the insights gained from numerical modelling more accessible. Click on any location to see both the upstream (red) and downstream (blue) groundwater flow paths, and gain insight into groundwater flow directions.

Do you need to see how big of an area is draining to your site? Use the Drainage Delineation tool to report watershed size and estimate water budget.

Right click on the map to activate the Drainage Delineation tool which will report the size of your watershed or drainage area. Carry the delineated watershed polygon over to our water budgeting tool to estimate the precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff and recharge for any watershed of interest.

Long Term Interpolated Climate Data

Did you know that the ORMGP runs a Delft-FEWS climate service across the study area? See interpolated temperature and precipitation data since 1900 and investigate climate summaries.

Long Term Interpolated Climate Data

Based on sub-catchments of approximately 10 km2, you can see the interpolated temperature and precipitation going back to 1900. For any period of time, the website gives users the ability to pull up and investigate the climate summary (rain/snow/temperature), as well as the previous 45 days of precipitation and compare it to the long term expected precipitation. Users can readily discern if a particular area is currently experiencing overly wet or dry conditions.

Interested in creating cross-sections within the ORMGP study area? Our tool provides access to thousands of analyses from over 600,000 wells, allowing you to visualize subsurface layers and ‘virtual boreholes’ based on our 3D geologic model.

Cross-Sections

You can create cross-sections anywhere within the ORMGP study area. We have conducted thousands of cross-sectional analyses to pick the tops of geological units at any of the over 600,000 wells in the database. These layers have been interpolated and are available on our cross-section tool that allows users to instantly look into the subsurface. The cross-section map also allows for the visualization of a ‘virtual borehole’ in locations of interest or of sparse well coverage, to explore anticipated stratigraphy based on our latest 3D geologic model.

Looking for an alternate way to access temporal data? Use our Shiny/Leaflet map to filter locations and access long-term hydrographs and ORMGP statistics.

Use our Shiny/Leaflet map as an alternate path to access temporal data from stream flow, climate and groundwater locations. The map allows users to filter locations (e.g., all locations with a 50-year period of record) to quickly assess the data availability at any station. Users can then access the long-term hydrograph of the data as well as all of the ORMGP generated statistics for any site.

Need access to a comprehensive well database? ORMGP offers over 600,000 wells with direct links to original records and a ‘Filter’ tool for customized queries.

ORMGP has pulled together many different well/borehole sources together into a single database. Get access to over 600,000 wells with direct links to the original well record or consultant borehole logs. The “Filter” tool allows users to query out wells in a variety of different ways (e.g., all wells deeper/shallower than a certain depth; all wells drilled in a certain time period, all wells drilled by a specific well drilling company, all wells where the driller has recommended a pumping rate above/below a specific amount, etc. Many wells in the ORMGP database are unique and cannot be found in provincial datasets.

How do the experiences of previous practitioners get passed along to future hydrogeologists? ORMGP interviews retiring practitioners to collect and map their stories, serving as valuable lessons for future hydrogeologists.

Groundwater Knowledge – Insight Locations

How do the experiences of previous practitioners get passed along to future hydrogeologists? In some cases stories are passed down orally for a time, but are soon forgotten. In most cases stories are not passed along and practitioners are left to repeat mistakes made many years prior. The ORMGP has an initiative to interview practitioners, often as they are retiring, to collect the stories they would like to pass on to Ontario’s future hydrogeologists. These stories are summarized and mapped on the website and serve as a warning: others have encountered grief here, pay close attention to any subsurface works that might be planned in the vicinity of these locations.
